Visualization Challenge

Mind Bytes Data Visualization Challenge: What is it?

The new Mind Bytes Data Visualization Challenge invites participants to explore the power of visualizing data to inspire, reveal insights, and showcase their skills. This challenge encourages individuals to use different visualization tools, techniques, and approaches while sharing their creations with the UChicago research community.

Participants will transform data into compelling visual representations. These visualizations help uncover trends, patterns, and relationships within the data. A well-designed visual not only highlights hidden patterns but also drives decision-making, fosters innovation, and sparks new ideas.

Do you have a standout visualization that brings your research to life? We encourage all students and researchers to enter the Mind Bytes Data Visualization Challenge to showcase their work, gain recognition, and compete for prizes.

  • The challenge is open to current University of Chicago students or postdocs from any area of study or field.
  • Participants may enter as individuals or in teams.
  • All participants (whether individual or part of a team) must be directly involved in creating the visualization. To ensure fairness and avoid multiple entries, permission must be obtained from everyone involved in the original creation of the visualization before submission.
  • Awards are restricted to individuals who participated in the challenge. The winner will need to be present at Mind Bytes to receive the award.

We encourage submissions that reflect the diverse perspectives and experiences of the University of Chicago’s students and researchers.

Data visualization may include but are not limited to maps, charts, graphs, data art, 3D models, web applications, videos/animations, etc. They can be static (figures from a paper, posters, infographics) or dynamic visualizations (videos, interactive stories, dashboards).

All submissions must be received on or before April 4, 2025. Only one submission per individual or group is allowed.

&nbsp

To participate, you must:

&nbsp

  • Submit your visualization along with a brief narrative or abstract that describes the visualization, how the data was collected or received (including any required acknowledgements), and any other relevant information you believe the reviewers should know.
  • Upload your submission to a Box folder and send the link to events@rcc.uchicago.edu.
  • Be available to present your visualization if selected.
  • Not supply untruthful, incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading information.

The top 10 finalists will be invited to present on April 11th, 2025. Winners will be selected and announced on the same day. The top 3 visualizations will receive an iPad.

The three winners will have the opportunity to present their visualizations at Mind Bytes on April 23rd, 2025. At least one member from each of the winning teams will be required to present at Mind Bytes.
